Majority of Welsh consumers want glass included in deposit return scheme

66% of Welsh consumers want glass bottles to remain in the country’s proposed deposit return scheme (DRS).

In addition, 60% of Welsh adults were also in favour of the scheme being consistent across all four nations of the UK, this could be related to more than 30% of glass not being recycled.

Whitehall sparked criticism amongst environmental campaigners when it was revealed glass bottles would be excluded from the scheme in Northern Ireland and England. The UK government is thought to have pressure Scotland to withdraw glass from its scheme.

A spokesperson for Nature 2030 said: “The Welsh Government had plans to introduce a deposit return scheme for drinks containers. These Schemes have boosted recycling rates and slashed litter in countries such as Denmark and Finland.”
