Amazon refits first US site to switch from plastic delivery packaging to paper

Amazon have announced its first automated US fulfilment centre to eliminate plastic delivery packaging, therefore allowing a transition that will allow customers to recycle at home.

The Euclid, Ohio facility will use paper that is kerbside recyclable.

Amazon has made significant strides in reducing plastic usage in their packaging by transforming existing machines to utilize paper instead. This change has led to the creation of durable, flexible paper packaging that incorporates advanced technology to customize sizes and securely seal items.

They’ve shifted from plastic air pillows to paper fillers and developed a machine that produces tailored, recyclable packages for products needing extra protection. Pat Lindner, VP of mechatronics and sustainable packaging at Amazon, sees this as a crucial step, expressing pride in their team’s innovation and dedication to further reducing plastic packaging for customers.

Pat Lindner said: “This is a major milestone for our US fulfilment centres, and I’m incredibly proud of the teams that developed new technologies to eliminate plastic packaging. This is just the beginning, as we continue to discover more ways to eliminate and reduce plastic packaging for our customers.”
