FPA calls for Defra information campaign on single-use plastics ban

The Foodservice Packaging Association (FPA) is calling for Defra information campaign to ensure small independent foodservice providers are aware of the single-use plastics ban.

The FPA is requesting that Defra grants a delay of minimum three months to allow existing stock to be used up. Martin Kersh, executive director at the FPA, said Defra announced the ban of some single-use plastic items earlier this year, but without a public information campaign.

Devon County Council recently incorrectly informed local business that paper cup and lids – and all single use plastic items – are to be banned.

These new rules were only issued in English, this means small independent business who do not operate in English will not be able to become aware of new regulations and sanctions for those still holding stocks of banned items after 01 October.

This will result in businesses, through no fault of their own, facing fines or sanctions for failing to comply with a ban they were not legitimately informed of.
