McDonald’s undertakes report on industrial impacts of reusable packaging

McDonald’s Corporation has pledged to evaluate and report on the opportunities and risks posed by a transition into reusable packaging, including its impact on single-use solutions and the environment – and non-profit foundation As You Sow has withdrawn its shareholder proposal with the company in response

McDonald’s is currently following a new law in France that mandates the use of reusable packaging for on-site dining. However, the company has not yet announced any plans to implement similar measures in the United States. In response, As You Sow submitted a resolution urging McDonald’s to assess the environmental, financial, and reputational advantages of extending the use of reusable packaging, particularly in light of impending American legislation that will impose taxes on companies for using single-use packaging.

Afterward, McDonald’s expressed its dedication to investigating the use of reusable packaging as part of its broader objective to adopt a sustainable strategy for packaging, waste reduction, and toys. The company announced its intention to release a thorough analysis in early 2024.
