Coveris

Leading European packaging expert Coveris has invested over £1.5 million to expand its linerless label capabilities at its Spalding site (Lincolnshire, UK). The company manufactures over one billion linerless labels annually for the UK and European FMCG sectors. This investment delivers increased output and supports the Lincolnshire-based facility’s growth plans in existing and diversified markets. Coveris Spalding, the largest global producer of linerless labels, installed the new state-of-the-art wide web flexographic printing presses and other site infrastructure improvements via a staggered programme.

The two new MPS wide web Flexo presses, operational since September and November 2022, can print Coveris’ core linerless formats Slidewrap™, c-wrap, envelope, labels for produce punnets, and contour-fitted formats for skinpack solutions. The new equipment offers a 10-colour flexographic print, including decorative cold foil embellishment. With 100% web inspection capabilities, the new investment enables improved quality, colour management, and consistency, ultimately reducing waste.

Linerless labels are considered a sustainable solution, thanks to their non-utilisation of carrier backing paper, meaning reel weight is significantly reduced by up to 40% compared to self-adhesive alternatives. This allows more labels per reel, less waste and fewer changeovers. The new energy-efficient and waste-reducing print presses, paired with linerless label solutions, are well aligned with Coveris’ No Waste sustainability strategy.

The Answer X1 offers total dust ingress protection and can withstand high-pressure water jets during the production washdown.
