Gillian Garside-Wight | Three (and a half) barriers holding back packaging’s circular economy

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) held a webinar on 23 November to take obligated businesses through their requirements under extended producer responsibility (EPR) for packaging from January.

Expect to see more talk around the ‘circular economy’ during and after COP27 – and rightly so, as it’s an issue that’s increasingly relevant beyond the world of packaging. Brands, governments and consumers are looking for better ways to reuse, repair and recycle existing materials and products.

It’s no surprise that the packaging sector is at the forefront of this conundrum as we’re one of the key gatekeepers of sustainability and environmental responsibility. Packaging is fundamental to many brands’ ability to provide products to consumers and it’s heartening to see so many working towards a circular economy.
