Spectra rolls out 30% minimum recycled content standard

Description

In 2018, Spectra introduced the PCR10 initiative, mandating 10% recycled material in all plastic containers, earning widespread customer support. The goal was to reduce virgin material levels, promoting the use of post-consumer recycled (PCR) content. Spectra built robust supply chains to meet customer demand and witnessed customers embracing recycled content, with some surpassing 10%, even reaching 100%. Managing Director Joe Maynard stated their success in encouraging customers toward recycled content and emphasized continued support for those striving to do so. The mandatory approach aimed to relieve customers of the responsibility by leading as a responsible manufacturer.

The UK Government’s upcoming tax will raise the minimum recycled content in plastic packaging to 30% from April 2022. Spectra, a proponent of recycled plastics, backs this move with the PCR30 initiative, ensuring 30% PCR in all new quoted projects, along with additional masterbatch colorant content to meet regulatory limits. Customers unwilling to comply must notify Spectra and bear the new levy. However, challenges are expected due to pressure on recycled material feedstocks and businesses’ lack of awareness about the impending levy.

Despite potential challenges, Spectra supports the government’s intent to encourage recycled material use, recognizing the unquestionable benefits of PCR. Replacing virgin materials with recycled content can aid in transitioning to a circular economy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and minimizing environmental impact. This shift can also present branding opportunities for companies to showcase their environmental values and responsible leadership, fostering customer loyalty and perception change.
