PFAs and the UK circular packaging push
Campaigners are calling for stronger action to remove PFAS chemicals from packaging as the UK continues its shift towards a circular economy.
PFAS, often referred to as “forever chemicals”, are used in some packaging applications for their resistance to grease and water. However, growing evidence of their environmental persistence and potential health impacts has intensified scrutiny from regulators and environmental groups.
Advocacy organisations argue that allowing PFAS to remain in packaging conflicts with the principles of circularity. Materials containing these substances can be difficult to recycle safely, raising concerns about contamination within recycling streams and long-term environmental exposure.
As policymakers push forward with sustainability targets and material recovery goals, campaigners are urging a precautionary approach. This includes phasing out PFAS in favour of safer alternatives and ensuring that new packaging systems are fully compatible with recycling infrastructure.
The issue highlights a broader challenge facing the industry: balancing functional performance with environmental responsibility. As pressure mounts, manufacturers may need to accelerate innovation in coatings and barrier technologies that meet both regulatory expectations and operational needs.
