Nestlé and IBM collaborate to advance AI-driven sustainable packaging
Nestlé and IBM Research have announced a strategic collaboration to accelerate the development of sustainable packaging solutions through the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep technology. This initiative marks a significant step forward in the food and beverage industry’s efforts to reduce environmental impact while maintaining product quality and safety.
Leveraging AI for material discovery
The partnership has resulted in the creation of a generative AI tool capable of identifying novel high-barrier packaging materials. These materials are designed to protect food and beverages from environmental factors such as moisture, oxygen, and temperature fluctuations, key contributors to spoilage and waste.
To develop this tool, Nestlé and IBM scientists compiled a comprehensive knowledge base of known packaging materials and, using advanced AI-based processing techniques, the team trained a chemical language model to understand molecular structures and their associated physical-chemical properties.
IBM’s regression transformer model was then used to analyse the relationship between these molecular features and material performance, enabling the AI to propose entirely new, recyclable, and cost-effective packaging materials.
A strategic shift toward deep tech
This collaboration is part of Nestlé’s broader digital transformation strategy, which includes embedding AI across its operations. The company has developed tools such as:
- AI-powered recipe optimization, balancing nutrition, cost, and sustainability.
- Digital copies of manufacturing equipment and production lines to enhance efficiency.
- Personalized nutrition platforms for both humans and pets.
In addition, Nestlé recently launched a dedicated R&D centre for deep tech, the first of its kind in the food and nutrition sector. This facility will focus on the development of next-generation technologies, including sensors, robotics, high-performance AI, and virtual/mixed reality systems, to streamline research and operational processes.
Executive perspectives
Dr. Stefan Palzer, Chief Technology Officer at Nestlé, commented:
“This novel AI-powered language model, developed in collaboration with IBM Research, illustrates how Nestlé is leading the digital transformation within the food and beverage industry. In the future, such breakthrough technology could be used to optimize the development of more sustainable packaging solutions across product categories.”
Alessandro Curioni, Vice President of IBM Research Europe & Africa, added:
“We believe that generative AI will continue to disrupt scientific discovery, impacting the core business of all knowledge-based industries, and enabling critical differentiation and sustainable growth.”
Toward a more sustainable future
As global demand for environmentally responsible packaging increases, this AI-driven approach offers an exciting path forward. By combining scientific expertise with advanced technology, Nestlé and IBM are setting a new standard for innovation in sustainable packaging, one that aligns with both consumer expectations and environmental imperatives.
