PepsiCo adjusts 2025 plastic packaging goals amid external challenges
PepsiCo has announced that it will not fully meet its 2025 target of designing 100% of its packaging to be recyclable, compostable, biodegradable, or reusable. The company now projects achieving 98% by 2025, citing external factors such as limited recycling infrastructure and the availability of food-grade recycled materials.
Despite these challenges, PepsiCo remains committed to its sustainability objectives. The company aims to reduce virgin plastic usage by 50% per serving by 2030 and increase the use of recycled content in its plastic packaging to 50%.
In Europe, PepsiCo is focusing on eliminating virgin fossil-based plastic in all crisp and chip bags by the end of the decade. The company is investing in innovative packaging designs and collaborating with partners to enhance recycling infrastructure.
PepsiCo acknowledges that achieving these goals requires systemic changes and collaboration across industries and governments. The company continues to advocate for improved recycling systems and policies to support a circular economy.
