Tesco trials advanced QR codes to enhance retail operations
Tesco has initiated trials of next-generation QR codes on selected own-brand meat and produce items in several stores across southern England. This pilot, conducted in partnership with GS1 UK and ten supplier partners, aims to modernise supply chain management and improve operational efficiency within the retail sector.
The new QR codes, powered by GS1 technology, provide a unique digital identity for each product, enabling the capture of detailed information such as use-by dates and batch numbers. This advancement is intended to enhance date code accuracy, minimise food waste, and strengthen measures to prevent out-of-date products from reaching customers.
Unlike traditional barcodes, which have supported the retail industry for over 50 years, these QR codes can carry a significantly greater volume of information. They offer real-time access to supply chain data and have potential applications including sourcing information, allergen details, sustainability credentials, and recycling guidance.
Isabela De Pedro, Tesco’s Supply Chain Development & Change Director, stated: “While it’s still early days, we’re already seeing the benefits of connecting our products to dynamic digital information that will help customers to know more about the products on our shelves. As well as improving the customer experience and unlocking new supply chain value, we are testing how QR codes can help Tesco with issues including traceability, compliance, sustainability and shelf-edge communication.”
This initiative marks the first trial of its scale by a UK supermarket and lays the groundwork for future digital innovations across Tesco’s operations.
With technologies like this leading the way, Packaging Innovations & Empack 2026 is expected to spotlight a new wave of packaging innovation, showcasing how smart labelling and connected packaging are transforming the future of packaging.
