MarinaTex
About us
MarinaTex is an advanced materials company developing high-performance natural polymer films and coatings that replace fossil-based plastics in packaging, without asking brands to compromise on barrier, finish or line speed.
Most fibre-based premium and food packaging still relies on a hidden plastic lining or laminate to hold out moisture, grease and oxygen. That thin layer is exactly what makes the pack hard to recycle: it contaminates paper streams, attracts the highest EPR fees, and is increasingly restricted under incoming regulation. The result is a direct conflict between the performance packaging needs and the end-of-life it now has to deliver.
We resolve that conflict at the material level. MarinaTex natural polymer coatings and films are plastic-free, engineered to match the barrier and finish premium packaging demands, and designed for end-of-life from the start.
What we offer:
MarinaTex Barrier Coating: a natural polymer coating that replaces PE, PFAS and plastic barrier layers on paper and board. Fingerprint-resistant for a flawless finish on high-end luxury packaging, with moisture, grease and oxygen protection on a single-material, recyclable fibre substrate. Drops into existing roll-to-roll coating lines with no capital investment for converters or brands. Proven in pilot coating trials and on track for commercial availability in 2027.
MarinaTex Window Film: transparent, flexible natural polymer film that replaces PET flexible-film windows and OPS rigid windows, keeping product visibility and the premium feel without the plastic. Barrier and shelf-life proven in the lab, with the manufacturing route still in development. Compostable, with recyclability under assessment.
A platform, not a single product: a natural polymer materials platform adaptable across packaging formats, from premium cartons and windows to food-service and single-use applications.
Our coatings deliver barrier performance measured on industrial equipment (MVTR 5-8 g/m²/day, OTR 4-7 cc/m²/day, COBB 45-77 g/m²) and achieve a CEPI recyclability score of 84/100 for the paper stream. Development is supported by Innovate UK, with validation partners across the value chain including local authorities, waste and recycling operators, paper and packaging manufacturers, and universities.
Why now: EPR fee modulation, the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), the UK Plastic Packaging Tax and California SB54 are all moving the market toward recyclable, single-material and plastic-free packaging. Natural polymers sit outside plastic restrictions and give brands and public bodies a credible, drop-in route to compliance without rebuilding their supply chain.
We work with premium brand owners, converters, manufacturers and public-sector procurement teams looking to remove plastic from packaging while holding performance and controlling cost.
