WorldStar Award 2022 | Monomaterial Packaging for Olives

The recyclable packaging solution, developed by A. HATZOPOULOS S.A. for the Greek olives’ producer GAEA, has been awarded with the WorldStar 2022 in the Food Category. GAEA has partnered with A. HATZOPOULOS S.A. for the launch of its first recyclable, mono-material olives’ snack packs destined for the European market. The conventional packaging film previously-used for the olives packs was completely redesigned, to meet the latest guidelines for packaging design for recycling, based on the X-CYCLE packaging concept. The mono-material, all-PP packs of this new product line have been certified by Interseroh and carry the “Made for Recycling” mark. At the same time, the new resource-efficient film offers an important pack weight reduction, compared to the previous film formulation, while it maintains the same functional and high-protective properties. We are thrilled that the new recyclable solution we designed for GAEA has gained the highest level of international recognition, positioned among the greatest achievements in packaging innovation worldwide.

X-CYCLE PP Fast Forward - A fast-running monomaterial solution for coffee packaging

      A. HATZOPOULOS S.A. presents a novel, fully-recyclable solution for coffee packaging, running at full speed. Ensuring high-barrier properties for the protection of the coffee’s aroma and flavors, the monomaterial film which we designed based on the X-CYCLE packaging technology delivers packaging sustainability, efficiency and full performance. The high-end X-CYCLE PP materials we developed specifically for the coffee market are in line with the CEFLEX and OPRL guidelines for flexible packaging design for recycling. Our solution replaces the traditional multi-material coffee triplex laminates with a mono-material, 89my formulation constructed exclusively from polypropylene films and thus it can be easily recycled through the PP recycling streams already existing in several European countries including the UK. The switch to the new X-CYCLE PP Fast Forward film is easy and efficient, as it achieves optimal performance during the packing process. Approved by the leading global packaging machine producers, this fully-recyclable packaging system reaches an output rate of over 70 side-gusseted coffee packs per minute. The novel film to be presented live at the event incorporates high-barrier properties against oxygen, aroma and water vapor. This way it is able to provide total safety and guarantee high protection of the coffee quality, maintaining the aromas and the various coffee flavors rich and vibrant for a long shelf-life. Many coffee brands now decide to follow a holistic approach to Sustainability in their supply chain, going beyond their coffee sourcing and looking to switch also their packaging into more sustainable alternatives.
