X-CYCLE | Recyclable packaging range
Innovative Solutions for a Truly Circular Economy At Hatzopoulos, we always focus on improving packaging design and on innovating to make our plastic products more environmental-friendly and easier to recycle. In response to the requirements set by the European Commission as well as our customers globally, we have developed a series of films that are recycle-ready: X-CYCLE. Flexible packaging is the best packaging choice when it comes to product protection, food waste reduction, consumer convenience and sustainability. However, today, most multi-material film structures that provide a broad range of protective and functional properties are not recyclable through the current recycling infrastructure. Our X-CYCLE solutions are the recyclable films designed and launched by A.Hatzopoulos S.A. to fill this exact gap. Consisting of three main categories: X-CYCLE PP, X-CYCLE POLY and X-CYCLE PE, these fully recyclable solutions are mono-material / homogeneous composites, suitable for recycling through the available corresponding recycling streams.

WorldStar Award 2022 | Monomaterial Packaging for Olives
The recyclable packaging solution, developed by A. HATZOPOULOS S.A. for the Greek olives’ producer GAEA, has been awarded with the WorldStar 2022 in the Food Category. GAEA has partnered with A. HATZOPOULOS S.A. for the launch of its first recyclable, mono-material olives’ snack packs destined for the European market. The conventional packaging film previously-used for the olives packs was completely redesigned, to meet the latest guidelines for packaging design for recycling, based on the X-CYCLE packaging concept. The mono-material, all-PP packs of this new product line have been certified by Interseroh and carry the “Made for Recycling” mark. At the same time, the new resource-efficient film offers an important pack weight reduction, compared to the previous film formulation, while it maintains the same functional and high-protective properties. We are thrilled that the new recyclable solution we designed for GAEA has gained the highest level of international recognition, positioned among the greatest achievements in packaging innovation worldwide.

X-CYCLE PP Fast Forward - A fast-running monomaterial solution for coffee packaging
A. HATZOPOULOS S.A. presents a novel, fully-recyclable solution for coffee packaging, running at full speed. Ensuring high-barrier properties for the protection of the coffee’s aroma and flavors, the monomaterial film which we designed based on the X-CYCLE packaging technology delivers packaging sustainability, efficiency and full performance. The high-end X-CYCLE PP materials we developed specifically for the coffee market are in line with the CEFLEX and OPRL guidelines for flexible packaging design for recycling. Our solution replaces the traditional multi-material coffee triplex laminates with a mono-material, 89my formulation constructed exclusively from polypropylene films and thus it can be easily recycled through the PP recycling streams already existing in several European countries including the UK. The switch to the new X-CYCLE PP Fast Forward film is easy and efficient, as it achieves optimal performance during the packing process. Approved by the leading global packaging machine producers, this fully-recyclable packaging system reaches an output rate of over 70 side-gusseted coffee packs per minute. The novel film to be presented live at the event incorporates high-barrier properties against oxygen, aroma and water vapor. This way it is able to provide total safety and guarantee high protection of the coffee quality, maintaining the aromas and the various coffee flavors rich and vibrant for a long shelf-life. Many coffee brands now decide to follow a holistic approach to Sustainability in their supply chain, going beyond their coffee sourcing and looking to switch also their packaging into more sustainable alternatives. At A. HATZOPOULOS S.A. we are committed to help our partners achieve their current and future sustainability goals. With the vision for a better future planet, we have developed the next generation of flexible packaging solutions for coffee, designed for recycling: X-CYCLE PP Fast Forward.

Hatzopoulos S.A. has completely redesigned the conventional packaging film previously-used for the ALDI 227g coffee packs, replacing it with a new monomaterial solution based on the X-CYCLE packaging concept, to be recyclable. The new all-PP packs meet the UK guidelines for packaging design for recycling and carry the corresponding OPRL label to help engage more consumers with recycling. At the same time, the new film offers enhanced packaging aesthetics and excellent high-barrier properties to preserve the sensitive coffee aroma, while it reaches full performance at the high-speed packaging lines. X-LOOP | Bio-circular and PCR packaging solutions
Closing the Loop on Flexible Packaging A.Hatzopoulos S.A. has created and launched a new packaging line, which takes the topic of packaging sustainability one step further: X-LOOP. This new packaging range incorporates circular / post-consumer recycled plastic films (PCR) and bio-circular plastics, it is ISCC PLUS certified and food-contact safe, in compliance with all Regulations on plastic materials that come in contact with food. These films do not differentiate from virgin ones. Their mechanical, physical and chemical properties remain the same, as does their performance on the converting and packaging lines. The laminated structures reach adjustable rates of circular / bio-circular content based on the amount of ISCC-certified material used in their production, according to the mass balance approach applied. The overall packaging solutions result in Lower Carbon Footprint relative to virgin / fossil-based plastics, while, at the same time, the barrier properties, packaging functionality and aesthetics of the original films are maintained.

X-LOOP | Bio-circular coffee packaging solution
Recyclability and the use of recycled and bio-circular materials in packaging design is a core component towards a more sustainable economy. The novel X-LOOP | Bio-circular coffee packaging film developed by A.Hatzopoulos S.A. is a recyclable, metal-free, monomaterial packaging solution, which is constructed from ISCC-PLUS-certified bio-circular plastics at adjustable rates. Delivering consumer convenience with easy-open pack technology and full performance at high-speed packaging lines, this coffee packaging material is a highly-efficient and recyclable alternative based on the international guidelines for flexible packaging design for recycling. Therefore, this mono-PP film can be disposed of safely to be recycled again, as it is compatible with the existing recycling stream for polypropylene, which is developed across Europe. At the same time, the film is designed to keep the coffee fresh and to preserve sensitive and delicate flavours and aromas in the long term, thanks to its excellent barrier properties. Finally, another particularly positive feature of this packaging material is its excellent printability in gravure printing and compatibility with lacquers, a feature which adds value to the final coffee packs, offering an enhanced shelf-appeal. Packaging is extremely important to protect food and combat food waste and we can do that with materials that can be lightweight, recycled and recyclable for reuse in a circular way. Facilitating plastics’ circularity, the X-LOOP | Bio-circular coffee packaging film incorporates bio-circular content and reduces the strain on natural resources, resulting in lower carbon footprint relative to fossil-based only plastic packaging. Helping build a circular economy and closing the loop on flexible packaging, it offers to coffee brands an innovative solution to meet their ambitious packaging sustainability goals.
