McVitie’s maker announced a £68m upgrade of UK bakeries
London-based pladis, creators of some of Britain’s most beloved snacks, such as McVitie’s and Jacob’s, has announced a £68 million upgrade of its UK bakeries in an effort to drive growth and reduce carbon emissions. This is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.
The bulk of the cash has been marked for sites in the North West of England, with the additional capital being used to increase capacity, capability, and productivity through updated factory infrastructure and increased automation lines.
Additionally, these investments are expected to cut 876 tonnes of carbon emissions each year – the equivalent of removing around 440 cars off the road.
pladis’ UK & Ireland managing director, Mete Buyurgan, said: “Today’s announcement is an important milestone in renovating our sites and unlocking capacity for our growth story.
“We have a fantastic suite of much-loved brands, baked by dedicated colleagues, and we have a responsibility to continue to nurture these brands for customers and consumers across the world. The news of these investments we are sharing today will enable us to achieve this.”
Site-specific Investment
pladis is investing £21 million in its Stockport site—home of the iconic McVitie’s Jaffa Cake—to install an innovative chocolate moulding line powered by advanced robotics.
In Liverpool, the Aintree bakery, known for Jacob’s Cream Crackers, will undergo a £33 million upgrade, including new ovens and infrastructure to future-proof the facility.
Carlisle, home to the world’s oldest biscuit factory, will receive £2 million to enhance its savoury assortments department, creating 48 new jobs. The site has been in operation since 1831 and currently employs around 800 people.
These investments reflect pladis’ confidence in the North West as a manufacturing hub, with its operations contributing nearly £240 million annually to the regional economy.
An additional £12 million will support infrastructure improvements across other UK sites, including facilities in Halifax, Harlesden, and Leicester.
