Tesco, Asda, and Lidl among retailers adopting self-separating porridge pots for easier recycling
Several major UK retailers, including Tesco, Asda, Lidl, Waitrose, Greggs, Morrisons, and M&S, have adopted Greiner Packaging’s K3 r100 self-separating
packaging solution for their own-brand instant porridge pots.
Innovative Packaging Design
The K3 r100 packaging consists of a plastic cup encased in a cardboard wrap. Unlike previous designs that required consumers to manually separate these components for recycling, the K3 r100 is engineered to self-separate during the waste disposal process. This automatic separation enhances the efficiency of near-infrared (NIR) detection systems at recycling facilities, ensuring that both the plastic and cardboard elements are correctly sorted into their respective material streams.
Environmental Benefits
By facilitating proper sorting and recycling without relying on consumer intervention, the K3 r100 packaging achieves a recyclability rate of up to 98%. This innovation represents a significant advancement in sustainable packaging, reducing the environmental impact of disposable food containers.
Industry Adoption
Rachel Sheldon, Sustainability and Innovation Manager at Greiner Packaging UK & Ireland, expressed enthusiasm over the widespread adoption of the K3 r100 solution among UK retailers. She noted that brands such as Waitrose, Greggs, Morrisons, M&S, Tesco, Lidl, and Asda have transitioned their instant porridge products to this award-winning packaging, reflecting a collective move towards more sustainable practices in the food industry.
This shift towards self-separating packaging underscores the industry’s commitment to environmental sustainability and highlights the role of innovative design in enhancing recycling processes.
