PackUK Reinforces Commitment to Packaging Reforms at Packaging Innovations 2025
At the recent Packaging Innovations & Empack 2025 event, the PackUK team emphasised
their dedication to implementing significant packaging reforms in the UK.
As the newly appointed scheme administrator for the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) initiative, PackUK aims to shift the financial burden of household packaging waste management from taxpayers to producers, embodying the ‘polluter pays’ principle.
During the event, PackUK outlined its responsibilities, which include setting EPR fees, collecting these fees from obligated producers, and distributing packaging waste disposal payments to local authorities. This approach is designed to incentivise producers to adopt more sustainable packaging solutions and reduce overall waste.
The team also addressed concerns from businesses regarding the financial implications of the EPR scheme. In response to industry feedback, adjustments have been made to the proposed fees, with reductions across various material categories, including plastic and glass. These modifications aim to balance environmental objectives with economic considerations, ensuring that the reforms are both effective and equitable.
PackUK’s presence at Packaging Innovations & Empack 2025 underscores its commitment to engaging with stakeholders and facilitating a smooth transition towards more responsible packaging practices in the UK.
