Marigold uses Sonoco’s Fully Recyclable EnviroCan® with Paper-Base for its range of plant-based food products

Marigold is using the new packaging for its nutritional yeast, known as Engevita; bouillon; gravy; stock cubes; sauces; and plant-based meat and fish alternatives.

Marigold emphasises its use of high-quality ingredients, which are free from artificial additives and palm oil, and cater to health-conscious consumers who value sustainability and ethical production​. The new, fully recyclable, paper-based packaging solution, created by Sonoco, exemplifies Marigold’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, setting a new standard in the market.

Sonoco’s EnviroCan®, which was on display earlier this month at Packaging Innovations 2025, has been designed with a paper bottom so it can be easily recycled by consumers. The user-friendly packaging ensures that after consumption, consumers can easily recycle the packaging at their kerbsides. The new packaging has the benefit of improved recyclability, while maintaining high functionality to preserve and protect the food contents.

Development of the new packaging – a process that spanned two years – represents a significant advancement in recyclable packaging manufacturing. The previous packaging, which featured a cardboard body with a metal base, presented recycling challenges. However, by collaborating with Sonoco and investing in new machinery, Marigold was successfully able to replace the metal end of its old packaging with a paper-based alternative. The result is a next-generation packaging solution with an all-paper body and base. This change not only enhances the packaging’s environmental footprint, it also meets the requirements for key UK and European packaging and recycling regulations.

The new packaging is made primarily from paperboard and has secondary materials, such as an aluminium seal and a plastic LDPE lid. The EnviroCan® paper end, part of the new design, ensures food safety and optimal shelf-life performance by providing an oxygen and moisture barrier. With more than a 20% reduction in packaging weight, Marigold has also drastically decreased its transport fuel consumption. The packaging solution also boasts a lower environmental footprint than other rigid packaging types and is produced from sustainably sourced, recyclable materials.

Marigold’s transition to fully recyclable packaging, by using Sonoco’s EnviroCan® with a paper end, aligns with its commitment to environmental stewardship. The can-body is made from 95% paper and is primarily sourced from recycled materials (60% post-consumer recycled fibre). The remaining 5% of the packaging consists of an inner liner, which is essential for protecting the product. The new packaging is now available in most UK supermarkets – and includes the latest OPRL recycling logo to help UK consumers recycle their packaging correctly.

Marigold won the Bronze Award at The Grocer New Product & Packaging Awards 2024 (Composite Packaging category) for the launch of the fully recyclable EnviroCan® with a paper-based design.
