Glassmakers are under the spotlight

The glass industry could be entering a new era of sustainability, with the first draft of a global standard for responsible glass production now open for consultation.

ResponsibleGlass has published its proposed International Standard for Glassmaking, introducing a framework designed to improve transparency, sustainability and accountability across the entire glass supply chain.

Currently, global glass production is estimated to generate around 95 million tonnes of CO₂ every year, yet the sector has not had a single internationally recognised sustainability framework to measure progress. The new ResponsibleGlass Standard aims to address this by creating a consistent approach for evaluating responsible glass production from sourcing raw materials and energy through to manufacturing, design and recycling.

Companies looking to achieve ResponsibleGlass certification would need to demonstrate performance across six key areas, supported by independent audits.

These include:

• Responsible sourcing and supply chain transparency – ensuring materials such as silica sand, soda ash and recycled glass are responsibly managed.
• Carbon emissions and energy use – monitoring and reducing environmental impact from production processes.
• Circularity and recycling – increasing recycled content and improving recovery systems.
• Environmental management – addressing water use, waste, pollution and biodiversity impacts.
  Responsible business practices – including transparency, legal compliance and sustainability reporting.
• Social responsibility – protecting worker safety, human rights and supporting communities affected by glass production.

The proposed standard also introduces common methods for measuring and reporting sustainability performance, including emissions, recycled content and responsible sourcing. This could help brands and customers compare the environmental performance of glass products more easily and make more informed decisions.

Developed through collaboration between manufacturers, suppliers, sustainability experts, civil society organisations and other industry stakeholders, the standard has been shaped through working groups focused on areas such as circularity, emissions reduction and certification requirements.

The draft is open for a 60-day consultation period, inviting feedback from businesses, suppliers, policymakers, NGOs and other stakeholders. Feedback will help shape the final version of the standard, which is expected to be released in early 2027.

ResponsibleGlass hopes the initiative will create a trusted benchmark for the industry, helping accelerate sustainability improvements while providing greater confidence in responsibly produced glass.
