Co-Founder, Department 22
Thomas Leech is a Royal College of Art (RCA) and Brunel graduate with MA in Product Design. He’s an alumni of the Schmidt Macarthur Fellowship (2015), that incubates the next generation of circular economy pioneers.
He is an expert in future materials and associate researcher for the recently founded Burberry Future Material Research Group, which applies radical thinking to develop more sustainable materials, transform consumer experience and advance manufacturing.
Thomas co-founded Department 22, which consults on sustainable design, circular economy systems and runs CE innovation training workshops with commercial partners including Panasonic and Sescon, amongst others. Their latest work includes a four-month exhibition – ‘London 2026’ – at the Roca Gallery, London, showcasing urban farming projects around the world and asks can ‘agritecture’ make cities self-sufficient?
Over ten years R&D experience in the design industry with leading industry organisations including Mulberry, Morphy Richards, Adrok and Onzo. Most recently, working as lead designer for award-winning travel pillow ‘Trtl Pillow Plus’.
Independent of Department 22, Thomas has run a CE design workshop for the Glasgow School of Art and teaches at the RCA across the school of design
