Packaging sector lacks preparedness of Extended Producer Responsibility – survey

A recent survey conducted by Ecoveritas, a company specializing in environmental compliance data, has revealed that the vast majority of businesses in the UK perceive their data collection capability as an ongoing project.

Despite the implementation of the Packaging Waste (Data Reporting) (England) Regulations 2023, which require obligated producers in England to collect and report data on the quantity and nature of packaging placed on the market starting this month, a significant majority of respondents (86%) admitted that they have not yet fully established their data collection processes.

DEFRA has confirmed that Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) will be implemented in 2024 as planned. However, the department stated that it will continue to engage in discussions with producers to finalize the scheme’s design and delivery plans. This news coincides with the announcement that producers are still in the process of establishing their data collection processes, despite the recent implementation of regulations mandating such data reporting in England.
